I’m hoping you have arrived at this discussion spot because you have been exploring our new reflection guide for community-based literacy programs.

Tell us what you think – does anything in the guide prompt your thinking? Does it confirm ways you are currently working in your community-based literacy program? Does it encourage you to think afresh about any aspect of your program?

Tell us about your program and your thoughts on how you might use this guide to enhance your work with all students – especially those who have experienced any form of violence or trauma in their lives.

For the next 5 months the creators of this guide will be here to join you in discussion. Ask us your questions, tell us your ideas, tell us your stories of what happened when you used it in your program….

Jenny

I loved helping edit the reflection guide. I’m so happy to see the crucial connections between learning and all forms of oppression explored in such a big way. If the ‘movement’ seems slow taking off, have faith. I worked in one of the first Interval Houses in the 70s. There was zero awareness and some opposition in the mainstream but after a few years we saw government ads in city buses with the message “Wife-beating is a crime.” Of course the struggle for peace and fairness is ongoing but the sense of movement and solidarity makes all the difference in the world.

Jenny, your role in sparking and building this movement is awesome. To the whole team, thanks and congratulations.

Wendy

Hello all, my name is Nadine Sookermany and I am one of the developers of the tools we are talking about here. I am a Community Literacy Worker at Parkdale Project Read, the community organization who partnered and created the community-based tool, as well as a college educator at George Brown College in Toronto. I would love to talk more about the ways the tool is useful to community-based agencies, as well as share more about ways we can address issues you are facing in your literacy programs…gaps, challenges, successes, etc.

Looking forward to the discussion.
