Why aren’t “we” talking about the role violence plays in limiting literacy learning in Canada and around the world?

In Canada the general public often assumes that those with limited literacy skills must be immigrants who haven’t had access to school – we don’t often talk about the way violence impacts successful learning for those who have spent their years working through the school system.

We also don’t talk about the picture around the world and the role all forms of violence play – the whole range of violences including war, migration, ableism, sexism, classism and so on – in limiting even the existence of schools, access for many, or full “presence” even when some attendance is possible.

Why do you think there is such silence on this even when “we” are publicizing literacy issues?

Hello everyone,
It’s wonderful to ‘be’ here and to see some familiar names and some new ones. I am very excited about this project and have been involved in it in a small way for some time. It’s great to see the results of so much hard work and creativity on this website.

My involvement with this project now is to work with Jenny and Decoda to field-test and promote these wonderful tools as far and wide as we can in British Columbia.

I’m looking forward to some great discussions.

Cheers,

Listen, there’s new stuff up on the site over the last few weeks; here’s a sampling:

There’s a beautiful graphic story about a young Aboriginal person in foster care here: http://learningandviolence.net/violence/aboriginal.htm

and over here: http://learningandviolence.net/learning/psychother.htm, there’s an article on neuroplasticity that a fancy professor just tole me was “stunning”.

And I have more – oh yes there is more – I can direct folks to newer stuff until the cows come home (which, in Manitoba, is about 20 after 4)… but only if you tell me what you’re into.

So that’s the new game – say a topic that relates to learning, and I’ll let you know where the freshest, most relevant stuff is that we’ve got going right now.
